As part of our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion journey, we are pleased to have supported KWCG's efforts to assist organizations serving Indigenous, Black and other racialized people as they deal with the effects of the pandemic. “We know COVID-19 disproportionately affected racialized communities. As a result, GSC stepped up with additional funds to support KWCF’s COVID-19 Community Response Fund and KWCF’s BIPOC Sustainability and Recovery Fund.
They took the opportunity during 2020 to consider the impact of COVID-19 and looked to bringing an elevated equity lens to their granting processes. In addition to being Canada’s fourth-largest health and dental provider, GSC is structured as a social enterprise, with the purpose of making it easier for people to live their healthiest lives. In recognition of Sherry Peister, a passionate community advocate in the Waterloo area and recently retired Chair of GSC’s Board of Directors, the fund was named the GSC Sherry Peister Community Impact Fund. Fast forward to 2020, and GSC announced additional funding to six new Community Foundations – including $500,000 to KWCF. This commitment began back in 2018 with a $6 million investment in six Community Foundations across Canada. As part of its commitment to social impact, Green Shield Canada (GSC) partners with community foundations across Canada to support programs that improve access to mental and oral health care.
